I actually tried to catch the whole thing buy putting the chrysalis right next to the computer while I was on Buzznet. But sadly even though I was able to get photo after photo they did come out a bit blurred. The lighting wasn't completely right and the whole process only takes less than 20 seconds of the chrysalis splitting open & the butterfly emerging. But I will include some of these pics in my journal. And I do have three more chrysalids left so maybe I can get them yet for you to see ~
This was taken hours after she emerged and was ready to be released I figured I would show you how I handle them when I tag them for releasing them for the Fall Migration that Monarch's make every year. This one isn't going to get tagged since it's a bit too early, tagging is in October if I have any butterflies at that time and if I score some tags. Here you can see this is a Male by looking at his hindwings where you will see two black spots those are his scent glands. I'm happy you have enjoyed this process it is quite Amazing what these Butterflies go though ~

He had started to become very active in my Butterfly case so I picked one of my African Violet stems and put it in there and he landed right on it and stayed just like this for about an hour.
As soon as it got dark last night he calmed down in the case and hung upside down on the screening and stayed that way. I released him this morning into a beautiful sunny day. I got a few shots of him basking in the sun before he took off. I will post that photo next ~

But because our weather had been very stormy all day I decided to release him on Saturday. These Butterflies are very strong even though you would think of them as fragile. Well I wouldn't suggest you handle them unless you know the proper way so you don't injure them. He would have tucked himself under a branch and waited for the weather to improve but why not wait so I could show you him outside. Now he might just fly off but that's nature so I will post the next photo later on today ~

When they first break out of the Chrysalis their wings are small and all wrinkled up. The black lines in the wings are veins and have a substance similiar to blood. The abdomen is very swollen and filled with this blood. So when the butterfly emerges it pumps the blood from the abdomen into the veins in the wings and that is how the wings expand. It takes about an hour or two for the wings to become firm and ready to fly. I would normaly release him once he is ready but there have been very bad storms again today so I'm holding off for a little while. I will be posting another photo of him completely finished in another hour or so. As you can see the wings are starting to show. When I got up this morning the process had progressed even more and now the Butterfly is out and it takes an hour or so for it's wings to dry and be ready to fly. At that time I could probably fit 20 of them on this penny but now they are almost to their full size probably another couple of days and they will be Pupating [forming a chrysalis] and then I have the wait until they emerge as a butterfly ~
The other two Chrysalids are still not changing as of today but they should be very soon.
