CAMEL CRICKET ........ SHEDDING IT'S EXOSKELETON
I was down my basement last night and looked very quickly at a Camel Cricket on the wall at first I though it was mating with another since there were a few on the wall close by but after I took the photo I realized it was just shedding it's skin or in it's case Exoskeleton. Most insects and spiders have an exoskeleton as a way of growing bigger. When the insect grows it usually has four stages of moulting and it's called a Simple Metamorphosis. The insect doesn't change it's shape just it's size. Of course Butterflies and Moths and a few other insects have a Complete Metamorphosis where they have a pupa stage that allows them to change shapes completely as in a butterly and moth changing from a caterpillar :D
Camel Crickets are quite unusual since they live in caves and basements !! They are nocturnal and the males and females do not make any sounds. In the Field and House Cricket species the males make the mating calls to the females. I love the ones down my basement I always try not to step on them but they have a very keen sense of hearing to warn them from predators like me and the spiders down there who would love to eat them. OH I don't want to eat them !! They jump very fast and high with huge hind legs :D
